Their recipes were crafted from East Javanese and West Sumatra. Their signature dishes include the wooden smashed ayam penyet (of course!), Rendang Ayam Sapi and Ayam Masak Habang.

AP Kari Mee came first. The Curry Mee was a delight with a strong seafood flavorful brothy gravy. Garnished with a strip of saltish fried fishcake somewhat like “keropok lekor”, chicken meat slices , raw pieces of long beans, hard-boiled egg, fully-cooked cockles (yeah!) and 2-3 medium sized fried crispy prawns, soaked into the semi-thick gravy goodness.

Next was the AP Ayam Penyet.

Our ayam penyet set came with a quarter chicken thigh fried till light brown in colour, a fried piece of tofu and tempe alongside some blanched kangkong, fresh cabbage and sambal belacan. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside but yet juicy on the inside.

It came hot and piping with steamed rice. The rice had a hint of coconut milkyness. The sambal belacan that came with it was truly not what it seems. It looked mild but when you tasted it, it seems okay until the spiciness rose up from the throat into your nose somewhat like a very mild wasabi. That was really unexpected. Love its hidden potential.

Then came the Ayam Habang. Somewhat like the Indonesian version of Ayam Masak Merah. Slightly coconut savoury. The breast meat was tender and fused with the colourful spices (most of the spices are originally from Indonesia) of bunga lawang, lengkuas and the prominent Kaffir lime leaves. The spiky spiciness is slightly denser than the AP Ayam Penyet’s sambal belacan. Eat with caution.

The Rendang Ayam Sapi was WHQ Lina’s favorite. She just closed her eyes whenever she scooped spoonfuls of its flavorful meat into her mouth. “Aah…heaven…”- she said. She loved the fact that the rendang chicken totally thwart her taste buds off the chart because she felt like she was eating beef rendang. But it was actually chicken meat, no beef was even present! Like “kena conned” without even knowing… a fascinating trick!

Next was the Kuah rawon. It was one of the most fragrant kuah rawon we ever came across.

WHQ Lina confessed: I still cannot get used to the mild sweet beefy soup of this Indonesian recipe… even in Singapore. I am always pampered by the thick “buah keluak” gravy of Nasi Rawan in Nasi Padang stalls all over Singapore. I just cannot get accustomed to the light diluted soup. But this soup has a prominent sweet fragrant of Kaffir Lime leaves which I love. It also helped in removing any “jerlak” after effects (if any). There were tender slices of “tetel” (beef tendons/spare parts) present.

The Ayam Samosa was filled to the brim with minced chicken meat. A good light snack for family and friends get-togethers or appetizers to soothe the hungry tummy.

The Indonesian tea was interesting. As compared to the typical “Teh Tarik” , it left an intriguing bitterness and a little “fire” taste in one’s mouth due to the unique Indonesian tea leaves being used.

As for the sweet icy beverages: They tasted as playful as they looked. The mixed concoction of pandan, rose bandung, the jellied chin-chow and also the throbbing mini “selaseh-looked alike” balls were like a play ground for the mouth. Fun, fun and more fun! We personally love the Bandung Soya Cincau. Great for the upcoming break fast in Ramadan. A definite charmer amongst the crowd of the young and old.

Overall, we have a jovial great time dining in Penyet AP restaurant with Mr Kauthar. Fascinating young chap with big dreams.

Honestly, selepas mencuba buat pertama kali, memang Semua hidangan yang dihidangkan sedap-sedap belaka especially sambalnya yang pedas tapi kawww, Ayam Penyet yang rangup dan lembut, daging lembu yang lembut dan sedap, Ikan Keli yang memang favourite saya dari dulu, dan lain-lain lagi. Rating saya berikan 9/10.Memang saya syoRkan untuk anda mencubanya pula.

RESTORAN AYAM PENYET – AP @ DE GARDEN MALL (HALAL)

The only time I have tried Ayam Penyet in Malaysia was my Waroeng Penyet experience at The Curve sometime ago. Ayam Penyet literally translate to ‘Flattened Chicken’, and no, before you go all smart-alec thinking ’bout that bad joke on why the chicken crossed the road (ahem), this is actually a traditional, Indonesian delight whereby the piece of chicken (a thigh, in this case) is marinated, then smashed with a wooden hammer-like apparatus, before deep-frying. Of course, one can argue about more efficient tenderizing method, for the chicken may turn out drier anyway, exposed to the rigorous process of deep-frying.

But the authenticity lies in its preparation process, more than the ingredients themselves. Marinated lightly, with some herbs and spices, the piece of chicken did remind us of the average Ayam Goreng served at most Malay ‘warung’, topped with some crispy fritters and served with a dollop of spicy sambal on the side, with blanched kangkung (water convolvulus), fried beancurd (tofu) and and piece of ‘tempe‘ (a fermented soybean cake) to round up the set.

No rice was served with this set, which is a clever business ploy, as I highly doubt you will eat the chicken on its own. A serving of rice is priced at RM1.50/USD0.40, while the Ayam Penyet set is priced at RM7.50/USD2.10.

The Gado-gado is a famous Indonesian salad, served with chunky peanut dressing, almost resembling the satay sauce. At Ayam Penyet- AP’s, the ‘gado-gado’ was also garnished with lots of crackers, particularly interesting were the few pieces of kerepek belinja, a type of crackers made from a bitter-ish plant (or tuber? someone enlighten me here). With half a boiled egg, the salad came in a rather measly portion enough for one, albeit priced reasonably at only RM3.50/USD1.

The staff mixed up our order for Daging Rendang, and instead served us with Ayam Rendang, without even an apology after we confronted them about the mistake. So much for customer service, and 5% service charge. Nonetheless, the Ayam Rendang came in a most blazing hot form, so do not push your luck if you’re not in favour of spicy food. It was tastier that the Ayam Penyet, in my personal opinion.

And do NOT look down on the Gulai Pucuk Ubi (Sweet potato leaves cooked in a rich, coconut milk-laden broth with added bird’s eye chillies), for the mild-mannered vegetable dish packed a most fiery punch! Garnished with some fried shallots, the almost creamy, pulp-ish serving of greens may remind one of Palak Paneer, a North Indian specialty of mashed spinach with cottage cheese. At a mere RM3.50/USD1, the serving was enough to be shared.

Anywayz, I had to put Pho Hoa on the waiting list since it’s quite far away from my place. But for Ayam Penyet AP, oh, it’s just walking distance from my house! So today I actually skipped gym for that! I just can’t wait!

I went with Ducum for dinner. We ordered the Ayam Penyet, Lele (haha, such a cute name lar)Penyet (ikan keli, cat fish) and terong (eggplant) Penyet, plus a bowl of Bakso, since the Penyet dishes doesn’t have any gravy, we couldn’t eat rice without any soup or gravy!
The Ayam Penyet and Lele Penyet was really good! Both very fresh and yummy! The sambal that came with them was burning spicy but nice! 🙂 Oh, did I tell you guys I love ikan keli? It’s not the kinda fish Chinese would eat but I think it is absolutely yummy!

But my personal favourite would be the eggplant! I don’t know why it’s just so tasty that even Ducum, someone who doesn’t like eggplant actually had it and like it! Believe me, it’s just THAT GOOD!

The Bakso was not to say very fantastic, but not-bad lor. I think it’s probably the best Bakso I’ve ever had in KL so far! Ducum and I just can’t stop drinking the soup which was a bit sour with the lime we added in! The sambal was also very spicy but syok eating it!

Like what KY said, the price was absolutely reasonable. Ducum had two cups of bubble tea (ha, too spicy mah…) at the price of only RM3.50 per cup! Not bad right? The only down side, at least to me, is the fact that the penyet dishes are deep fried, and that means… Super duper fattening!!! Aiks, no skipping gym anymore tomorrow!!!

Shirlexia and Ducum were really happy with the Penyetx3, Baksox1, ricex1,bubble teax2, teax1!
But well, WE WILL BE BACK FOR MORE!!! :p

So when I spotted this place on the way home after a round of hitting golf balls everywhere at the Sunway driving range, I immediately suggest to Horng that we should just have our dinner there.

The set up of Ayam Penyet AP is just a notch above your normal kopitiam. There are a few tables alfresco style for those who might want to have puff after meal, and also plenty of tables for those who prefer air conditioning. The restaurant is clean and comfortable tho there isn’t any effort being put in interior decoration.

The menu here is a bit more extensive compared to Waroeng Penyet, other than the standard Ayam penyet, they have beef, cat fish, prawn, bakso (beef ball), mixed vegetable, and a few types soups too.

We ordered ayam penyet, lele penyet (keli, cat fish), and terong penyet (eggplant) to go with two rice for dinner.

The ayam penyet (I had the drumstick) was just as tasty as their counterpart at the Curve. Crispy, flavorful, and with that very addictive hot sambal. I also like the fact that they give more crispy bits.

The deep fried cat fish too was not bad in its own, very aromatic and soft in texture. And as a person who loves eggplant, I absolutely adore the terung penyet. The crispy bits and sambal works very well with the contrasting soft texture of fried eggplant. Very delicious.

Ayam penyet was priced at RM 7 (already the most expensive item in their menu!), the fish was RM 6.50, and eggplant only RM 2.50. Two plates of rice at RM 1.20 each and you have a very satisfying dinner for way less than RM 20.00!

I am sure this is one of the places I would visit repeatedly.
